There has been plenty of news surrounding the defensive tackle position for the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason.
They lost Bennie Logan to the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency. To help fill the void, executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman moved back 25 spots in the third round to acquire Tim Jernigan from the Baltiomore Ravens. Just a couple days later,Authentic A. J. Cann Jersey, Beau Allen suffered a pec injury while working out and is expected to be shelved until at least September.
More news emerged this week, with ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reporting that the Eagles have shown interest in Jared Odrick, as have the New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks.
Odrick, including 5.5 in 2015., a 29-year-old free agent out of Penn State, is a seven-year vet who has played for the Miami Dolphins and, most recently, the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has 23 career sacks
Whether the Eagles’ still have interest following the Jernigan trade (beyond perhaps a veteran minimum deal) remains to be seen.
It’s fair to say that depth still remains a question mark following the Allen injury. The team will need to have other rotational options in the pipeline. Perhaps the answer lies within. Destiny Vaeao,
It appears that an unpaid water bill allowed German investors to briefly claim rights to owning the Baltimore Ravens‘ football home,Shon Coleman Jersey , M&T Bank Stadium.
The $5, which allowed the real-estate investors to purchase the lien on the stadium on Monday (as well as the Baltimore Orioles‘ Camden Yards) and — for a few nervous hours — it appeared they might have the right to claim ownership of both prized buildings if the debts remain unpaid,200 bill was in arrears, according to the Wall Street Journal (subscription required).
which manages both stadiums,Of course, disputed both the amounts owed on the water bills and the veracity of the sale, the Maryland Stadium Authority, and city officials admitted the following day that a computer error was to blame and that the sales would be revoked.
and yesterday members of the media were able to get their first real look at the Colts in team drills.,The Indianapolis Colts are in their first week of OTAs for the offseason
After the practice, which is very helpful and informative to get an idea of what the Colts are looking like early., Colts.com’s Kevin Bowen wrote about what the first-team depth chart was from the day’s practice
such as Scott Tolzien taking the reps for Andrew Luck or T.J. Green at safety for Malik Hooker/Clayton Geathers or Rashaan Melvin at cornerback for Quincy Wilson or Joe Haeg at left guard for Jack Mewhort. And then Robert Turbin saw first team reps with Frank Gore working out in Florida.,Some of the ‘starters’ yesterday were only there for injury reasons
there were three things that I though particularly interesting from the depth chart Bowen tweeted out that I think are worth mentioning here.,But even still
but it’s interesting to get our first look at how the Colts are lining up in OTAs.,Keep in mind that this ‘depth chart’ will change A LOT throughout the offseason and into training camp as the Colts try to mix things up and give different guys a shot
while the remaining wideouts are projected to battle for a maximum of two practice squad spots over the course of the summer.,The New England Patriots already have one of the deepest wide receiver corps in the NFL. Six members of the unit can be considered locks to make the 53-man roster
the Patriots added another player to the mix: Andrew Hawkins becomes the 12th wide receiver on New England’s roster. ,Now
I’ve decided that I’m going to join the New England Patriots. I’m super excited about the opportunity,He said:”After giving it a lot of thought, man, to join the reigning football champions. When I exited Cleveland I said it was about joining a contender and the Patriots are the contender; they’re the reigning champs. The program is top notch and you get the opportunity to play with the best quarterback and the best coach in NFL history.
like I said,Like I said it was never really about the money, and to be honest I passed up on deals that were probably double the compensation but, I’ve got my work cut out for me. It’s an opportunity and that’s how I’m approaching it. Going there, it was all about winning for me at this point and putting myself in the best position to do so. Nothing’s for sure, seeing how I stack up with the best and try to earn my keep and prove my work.
The differences are subtle. A few new name plates are scattered around Davon House’s locker. A few new faces surround him in the cornerbacks room.
the overall landscape remains unchanged from the last time House stood inside the Packers’ locker room two years ago. The No. 31 on his jersey is the same. The guiding principle behind Dom Capers’ defense has been preserved.,Yet
House has only been back in Green Bay for a little more than a month, House is finally home., but the seventh-year cornerback already feels back in his element. After a two-year hiatus
who re-signed with Green Bay in March following a two-year stint with Jacksonville. “It’s the same locker and same lockermates with Ha Ha (Clinton-Dix). There’s a few guys in the room who have changed,“I kind of feel like I never left, but it’s still the same.”,” said House
A fourth-round pick in 2011, but also dealt with a few setbacks that curtailed his chances at earning a full-time starting job in the Packers’ secondary.,Shane Ray Jersey, House flashed potential throughout his four seasons in Green Bay
registering career-highs in tackles (60),Ty Sambrailo Jersey ,The 6-foot,Authentic Taylor Decker Jersey , interceptions (four) and pass deflections (23) in 16 regular-season games with 15 starts., 200-pound cornerback got the opportunity to be a starter when he signed with Jacksonville as an unrestricted free agent in 2015. House enjoyed a career year during his first season in Jacksonville
As promising as his first season with the Jaguars was,
It has been a while since Larry Fitzgerald can remember being in a receivers room as deep and as talented as the Arizona Cardinals’ for this coming season.
it’s Fitzgerald who wants to pass along to the younger generation the type of mentoring and guidance he received after being drafted No. 3 overall in 2004.,As the elder statesman of receivers room
somebody they can rely on,”I want to be a resource for the younger guys if they have questions for me,” Fitzgerald said. ”And I can try to help them reach their goals, just like I was able to reach mine.”
Fitzgerald lived out every teenage football player’s dreams. He was a ball boy for the Minnesota Vikings in high school, Anthony Carter and Randy Moss, during which time he befriended the likes of Cris Carter, who mentored Fitzgerald during his prep and collegiate years. And when Fitzgerald was starting out with the Cardinals, Marvin Harrison, watching tape., Shannon Sharpe, Marshall Faulk and Torry Holt reached out to help him. Even Terrell Owens spent time with Fitzgerald
It still continues today.
’Fitz,”I can name 100 guys who call me on my phone,Budda Baker Jersey, I saw you play last week. You need to do a better job of getting out of this break,Authentic Takkarist McKinley Jersey,’” Fitzgerald said. ”Not in a way to be demeaning, but just to help me. And they don’t have to do that.
especially from established starters on a team not long removed from a championship parade.,The big-bellied linemen aren’t accustomed to getting such praise
winning the Super Bowl and being able to buy my whole D-line something and our nose tackles something just because they’re so influential and so key to what we do in the running game and in the passing game.”,”Oh yeah, I definitely love the nose tackles, I’ve always dreamed of us going to the Super Bowl,” Davis said. ”They’re as key to us as the O-linemen are to the running back. So
NOTES: Marshall summed up the Broncos’ quarterback competition between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch like this: ”They’re competing,Dorian Johnson Jersey,T. J. LoganJersey, man. They have a new offense. They’re still learning. Mike McCoy has brought a lot of juice to the offense. I love the offense,Authentic Takkarist McKinley Jersey,Authentic Duke Riley Jersey,Authentic Sean Harlow Jersey, personally. Paxton has that arm you dream of. Siemian has the accuracy and the mind that you dream of. So, it’s going to be a good battle.”
DeMarcus Lawrence isn’t in much of a reflective mood these days.
How frustrating was last season for the Cowboys’ defensive end -- first a four-game suspension, then a troublesome back injury?
“That was last year,” he said. “That’s why we’ve got this year.”
Coming off back surgery in consecutive offseasons,Authentic T. J. Logan Jersey, Lawrence is focused on getting in the best shape possible and becoming a force in the pass rush again.
The 2014 second-round pick showed promise as a rookie with two sacks in the playoffs. In 2015 he led the defense with eight sacks.
The 2016 season was mostly forgettable on a personal level.
Lawrence spent the first four games on the Reserve/Suspended list for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Then his surgically-repaired back limited his availability and production as the Cowboys pushed toward the playoffs.
When the Ravens jumped on signing running back Danny Woodhead this offseason,Reggie Ragland Jersey , the biggest question about the veteran running back was whether he would be healthy.
Fast forward to the start of Baltimore’s Organized Team Activities (OTAs), and Woodhead took the field for the team’s first practice.
I’m back. No restrictions,Authentic Cardale Jones Jersey,“Yes,Authentic Ronald Darby Jersey ,” Woodhead said. “I’m just playing football now. I haven’t been thinking about needing to do stuff to rehab it because I’m healthy now. It’s exciting to get football going.”
Woodhead’s knee injury came on Sept. 18 last year in a home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He was lined up in the slot as a wide receiver,John Miller Jersey, darted across the field and caught the ball just after the TV announcer told fans Woodhead was going to be a prominent part of the Chargers’ offense that afternoon (and season).
It was a torn ACL in his right knee in just the second game of the year. His season was done after just 19 carries for 116 yards and six catches for 35 yards and a touchdown. It was a tough blow, but Woodhead has a different outlook on it months later.
“I believe it happened for a reason, I wouldn’t be here.”, and I think that, when it was all said and done,” he said. “I’m big in my faith and following God, He knew what was going to happen. Who knows? Maybe, if I didn’t get hurt
Ravens safety Eric Weddle had already told Woodhead that he should come to Baltimore. After the injury, it seemed like destiny. Woodhead’s contract expired and the Chargers weren’t bringing him back.
too. Darby ranked as PFF’s second-best cornerback in run support in what was an otherwise down 2016.,The analytics would seem to back that up
“You know, it’s on to a new year,” he said. “I could have had the best year last year and had a horrible year this year. You’ve just got to leave that behind and move on.”
joining Kansas City’s Marcus Peters and Jacksonville’s Jalen Ramsey.,PFF recently named Darby one of the top three cornerbacks in the NFL under 25
Darby came in and immediately started for the Bills and as a rookie, he at least maintained a strong performance defending the run, earned an incredible 86.1 overall grade — the third-highest PFF overall grade ever for a rookie cornerback. While 2016 was certainly a step back, and was far from alone in regressing in a Bills’ defense that capitulated over the season, Brett Whitefield,” the article’s author,“In 2015, wrote. “Darby’s ability showed that he can play at elite levels from day one, earned him the selection here over his competition.”
The feel-good story of the Green Bay Packers’ draft has turned into the first major medical watch of the 2017 season.
Welcome to the NFL, Vince Biegel.
In a sign of how quickly things can change for a rookie, the Packers’ fourth-round pick now faces questions about whether he’ll be ready for the start of training camp after he underwent foot surgery last week to correct a problem that dates to last fall at the University of Wisconsin.
Although that’s not the death knell to Biegel’s rookie season, it is a reminder that teams that count on rookies to make an immediate impact might be asking for too much.
The Packers drafted Biegel to bolster their pass rush after losing Julius Peppers and Datone Jones in free agency. They put his locker smack dab between Clay Matthews and Nick Perry with the hope that he would learn quickly from the team’s two best pass-rushers,Tony Jefferson Jersey, something that was not lost on Biegel when he reported for rookie camp the week after the draft.
“I think it started when my locker was right next to Clay Matthews; that was really a dream come true if you will,
That would take the pressure off Newton to run, which has been an objective this offseason.
It’s just a matter of, as Rivera said, the Panthers finding better ways of using Funchess, and Funchess working harder to get open.
“He’s confident in what he’s doing,” Rivera said. “He’s willing to share with the younger guys and help coach them up. So I’m excited about who he can be.”
“We felt real good about last season and we have a number of talented seniors with some very good sophomores and juniors on the team moving up,” Marshall said. “I think we’ll be able to make a strong run to state.”
There won’t be any university sponsored camp competitions this summer by Marshall, although he plans to visit some potential suitors with his “moms and pops.”
Marshall likes shrimp, fish and crawfish, but he isn’t limited simply to Southern fare.
“If you put it in front of me, I’m likely to eat it,” he said chuckling.
He credits former Parkway coaches David Feaster and Scoggins for being role models for him and helping him with life issues.
By 8 a.m., he was in Boulder, Colorado, for his graduation ceremony at the University of Colorado. On Friday night, he walked across the stage to receive his diploma from the business school.
He didn’t get a chance to celebrate. He had an early-morning flight Saturday to return to Dallas for his first practice.
“My lifelong dream was to play in the NFL, obviously you have to go to school to do that, and once I got into Colorado, I saw an opportunity to graduate early,” Awuzie said. “I kind of set my eyes on that and tried to handle both. It was really gratifying and it was a really proud accomplishment for me. I’m a humble guy, and my accomplishments I don’t put on par with anything else. But for my graduation, I was really proud of what I did to get there.”
“I didn’t look up from the station,” he said. ”I could hear the judges yelling to the other kids, and overhear them as they visited the kids at the other stations, but I tuned them out.”
As far as the $10,000 prize is concerned, Josh’s mom, DeShona, said that is earmarked for college. “It’s in a trust. That will go a long way to a good future for Josh.”
As to the future, Josh and his dad will be taking a break from contests for the remainder of the year, but they have eyes on another competition in the future.
“Our plan is to take a break for the rest of the year, but then enter the Great Food Truck Race,” Josh said. “They have a contest for food truck wannabes, for people that do not own one, but want to, and we are going to give that a shot.”
Josh is not only a cook, but has been a straight-A student at Marion Jr. High and an active member on the Marion Rec Athletics baseball team where he prefers to play first or third base. He also plays the saxophone, and is an active outdoorsman who likes to gig frogs and duck hunt.
There is also a question of how good Trubisky was in college. He had a big season in 2016, throwing for 30 touchdowns and running for five more while being picked off only six times, but he also spent two seasons backing up Marquise Williams, who was undrafted out of college; got cut by the Vikings and Packers; and is now playing in the CFL. If Trubisky is a franchise quarterback, why couldn’t he beat out Williams?
The Bears won’t know exactly what they have until training camp and the preseason. After that, there are any number of ways in which, ready or not, Trubisky could become a rookie starting quarterback.
Peppers also ran for 167 yards and three scores, caught two passes, returned 21 punts for 310 yards and a touchdown and returned 10 kicks for 260 yards.
Where does Peppers fit on the field?
Pretty much wherever he wants, Mattison said.
“He can play wherever he wants. Wherever he wants,” Mattison said, repeating himself for an exclamation point. “That could be tailback. He’s a special athlete.
“He did so much for our team because he is unselfish. The guy played offense, was the best kick-returner in the Big Ten and played different positions on defense. How about if he would have played just one position? How good would he have been?”
After being drafted by the Browns, Peppers said he looked forward to “going back to his natural habitat” of being a strong safety.
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh predicted Peppers will have a significant and immediate impact on the Browns’ roster. He said Peppers is being diligent with working out and learning in his early weeks with the Browns.
“He’s doing his thing,” Harbaugh said. “I think this bodes well for Cleveland, because he’s a heck of a football player.”
Peppers is expected to vie for a starting position at safety and possibly return kicks and/or punts for the Browns.
Mattison said Peppers’ work is just getting started.
“He’s a guy who will put everything off to the side when he comes to that stadium and goes to work,” Mattison said. “They’re going to get 100 percent of what he is. Every day he goes to practice or plays, he gives it everything because he loves it so much.”
Njoku could be a TE1 or a flex option with the worst case scenario being a TE2.,
“I feel fantastic. I’m all in. Happy to be here,Authentic Jamon Brown Jersey,” Scandrick said Tuesday after the Cowboys completed their first practice of mandatory minicamp. “It’s the only place I know. I’ve never been in another locker room. I don’t want to go in another locker room. I want to finish this thing out here and win a championship.”
Alexander Radulov chose the Dallas Stars over the Montreal Canadiens, and that has to be a bitter pill for Marc Bergevin to swallow.
“If you want loyalty, buy a dog,” said Bergevin on Sunday.
or because he felt he had a better chance to win in a city he’d prefer to be in,adidas Ryan Getzlaf jersey,Whatever the case may be,adidas Ryan Kesler jersey, the reason he left doesn’t matter all that much. Whether it was because of when the offer from Montreal came in,authenticRyan Kesler jersey, or because of the fact he could save roughly $4.3 million over the term of his contract due to a better tax rate in Dallas versus the one in Montreal, none of that changes the fact that his departure leaves a burning hole on the right side of the Canadiens’ offensive depth chart.
“If you want loyalty, buy a dog,” said Bergevin on Sunday.
The Canadiens general manager had already appeared resigned to the reality that his star right-winger might opt to play elsewhere, and he even said he didn’t begrudge him for it. But that doesn’t make losing him any easier to digest.
What might make it even harder is the fact—which was confirmed to Sportsnet by a member of Montreal’s senior management team—that the same offer of five years and $31.5 million Radulov signed in Dallas had been tendered to him by Bergevin days before July 1.
and his summer vacation plans provide the latest evidence.,Danny Shelton likes to keep himself on his toes when he’s away from the football field
Cleveland’s third-year defensive tackle will be across the globe in Samoa for multiple reasons. Though the headlining event is a much anticipated family reunion,Over the next couple of weeks, Shelton will be putting in plenty of work with Pene Talamaivao, womens Xavier Woods Jersey, a former NFL defensive lineman with whom Shelton has worked in the past.
“I think it’s going to be awesome because just being out with the family and being in a different environment and training out there, womens Garett Bolles Jersey, it will help me focus in more,Authentic Carlos Henderson Jersey,” Shelton said. “Being in an uncomfortable place and trying to train football-wise is going to be different. I’m excited for what I have planned.”
But what makes this even worse than just the word he used? Getzlaf is a team captain. A leader. And he just called a referee a “cocksucker.” Multiple times.
The term I’m using for the NHL on this one is “cowards.”
Just as Shaw’s suspension last year had major repercussions, sending a clear message to players that gay slurs will not be tolerated, the NHL today is saying that gay slurs are open and available, as long as you don’t use “the F word.”
Of course if the NHL asked a bunch of gay men how they feel about the word “cocksucker,” they might understand. My guess is they asked one or two who said “it’s not as bad as faggot.”
I disagree, as I said above. But whether you agree or not, the sport needs to be rid of all gay slurs, as it must be rid of all racial slurs. For the NHL to now give the green light — and to be clear, that’s exactly what this is — to use some gay slurs sends the league moving backward again.

New Colts’ GM Chris Ballard also had good things to say about the offensive line as well.

The offensive line also has been working together for many months of the offseason as a unit.
QB Andrew Luck commented on the line’s work ethic.
” Luck said. “It’s nice for me because it meant I didn’t have to be alone in the weight room and training room.,“There’s seven or eight of them that have been here consistently working out

I wonder whether the Cowboys’ leader in sacks will reach double digits in 2017. They have gone three straight seasons without a player reaching at least 10 sacks after having DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher reach at least 11 sacks from 2006 to 2013. The Cowboys went from 1997 to 2005 without a player reaching double figures, the longest drought in franchise history. DeMarcus Lawrence had eight sacks in 2015, but he had just one last year and is coming off his second back surgery in as many offseasons. Benson Mayowa had six to lead the Cowboys last season, but he might not be a starter or play more than 40 percent of the snaps. How the Cowboys rotate their pass-rushers plays a part in the individual sack total, but if they had a Ware-type rusher, you can be sure he would play a ton.
Teammate Larry Ogunjobi (Save us Obi-Wan) is confident Myles will be fine.
There’s no quarterback controversy in Baltimore. But, there’s always the debate over Joe Flacco being elite. Most B-More fans will tell you that their season was a stinker because of Joe’s injury. Yes, the Raven’s D is pretty good (yawn). But, Flacco is supposed to be the big cheese.
According to CBS Sports’ Sean Wagner-McGough, the Ravens are in need of a better QB to toss the pigskin around. Well, he didn’t actually say that. Free agent wide receiver Eric Decker is rumored to be thinking of making his new home with the Ravens. But, Wagner-McGough isn’t buying the elite talk concerning Flacco.
That should make Bengals fans feel better. Andy Dalton has been shunned from the elite conversation and has better stats the that guy in purple. You want proof? Dalton’s QBR falls in at 89.1 with his highest being 106.2 in 2015. Flaco chimes in at 84.5 and 93.6, respectively. The latter number was seven years ago. Maybe the 2012 Super Bowl has something to do with that elite talk. Meh, go figure.
He hasn’t had the same apprehension practicing at safety.
“I like man-on-man coverage,” Metellus said. “I like getting in close and seeing everything. I feel like that’s the best spot for me. I don’t make a lot of calls but I’ve got to make somebody right. If somebody messes up, I’ve got to make somebody right.”
With the move from linebacker to safety, Metellus looks to shed the image of being known as “Jabrill Peppers’ replacement.” Metellus will join a secondary that has to replace its starters from 2016 and he gained valuable experience playing Viper against Florida State in the Orange Bowl.
“It just got me comfortable,” Metellus said. “I played the whole season on special teams so I never really got a feel for defense unless it was at the end of a game or something. Playing that Orange Bowl game got me comfortable and showed me I can play with the best guys in the country.”
“Green Bay played like a 9-7 team last year and ended up with a 10-6 record,” Alexieff wrote. “And even with all my pontificating about how Rodgers’ might be slowing down, they still have probably the best QB in the league. For the season to go off the rails, there would have to be a significant number of injuries and an incredible improvement from the rest of the teams in the division. I see the Packers going 12-4, but being bounced from the playoffs in the divisional round, hopefully by the Seahawks.”
In a division where both the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings outclassed the Packers for long stretches last season, and were two of the most aggressive teams in the NFL at addressing their biggest weaknesses, it’s hard to see how Rodgers automatically makes them 2-3 wins better.
But betting against the Packers and their quarterback’s been a losing strategy for nearly three decades.
Strong acknowledged he was lost a year ago when the Texans drafted him in the third round.
During his several visits to NFL teams prior to the draft, Strong indulged in steaks, lobster tails and junk food and eschewed his training regimen. He tipped the scales at nearly 237 pounds.
”It was all those months of eating and too much traveling,” Strong said. ”I had never been that big before in my life.”
His mother barely recognized him, wondering aloud what was going on with her once-skinny son.
”I was surprised because he started loving steak and he was never a beef eater as a kid,” Alexis said. ”He told me about the steaks and lobsters and all the stuff he had developed an appetite for. He wasn’t working out. It was the biggest I’ve ever seen him. He didn’t look healthy. I kept asking him, ’Are you OK?’?”
Expectations have since grown for Montgomery, who will now enter the 2017 season as Green Bay’s No. 1 running back. He’ll keep the job long term if he can continue to break tackles and gain yards after contact at a rate similar to 2016.
Teams will have all of last seasons snaps to game plan to stop Montgomery and the running game. That should help open up more options in the passing game, but it will keep his rushing numbers slightly depressed. I’m thinking a really successful season for Montgomery would be 800 - 900 yds rushing and 500 receiving yds. Maybe 10 TD’s total.
Fans need to be careful about expecting too much this year and having unrealistic expectations.
According to Pro Football Focus, Montgomery was last year’s leader in “elusive rating,” a metric that uses broken tackles and yards after contact to calculate a running back’s ability to create “beyond the point of being helped by his blockers.”
If draft day wasn’t exciting enough for Adams, the 6-foot-4, 304-pound defensive tackle and his girlfriend gave birth to their first child, Montravius Jr., shortly before the Packers called on draft day.
The Packers also return veteran Letroy Guion and Christian Ringo from last year’s unit, though Guion will miss the first four games of the season due to suspension and has another off-field legal matter pending.
Ringo, a sixth-round pick in 2015, spent the entire season on Green Bay’s active roster a year ago, registering two tackles and a forced fumble in eight appearances.
Also competing for spots during training camp will be undrafted rookie Izaah Lunsford and practice-squad holdover Brian Price, who played in one game for the Packers as a rookie.
Decker’s right shoulder surgery has put a bit of a wrench is that plan, at least for a little bit until he’s able to return, which makes it even more imperative for Glasgow to hit the ground running.
“For me, I’ve found some stuff that didn’t work for me well last year and I’m trying to improve and get better on those things and try to become a better player,” he said.
Glasgow’s embraced the competition that’s developed for the left guard spot, and thinks it will make whoever comes out on top that much more prepared for the job when the season starts.
The Lions will need whoever that is to help the left side of the line fill the void until Decker returns.
“I think the competition should always be there,” Glasgow said. “You should always be a competitor. I think that a lot of guys on our offensive line have that mentality. That competitor’s mentality. I think it’s going well. I think I’ve gotten better. We’ll see.”
One of the examples I like the best is former Saints tackle Jammal Brown. Coming off a Pro Bowl appearance, Brown lost the entire 2009 season to sports hernia surgery. The 2009 Saints actually improved on offense according to Football Outsiders’ DVOA ratings, moving from 16.3 percent above average to 24.3 percent above average.
Modern statistical analysis of football is incredibly behind most other sports. On a numerical level, the majority of the most-trusted numbers in football analytics measure things on a team level. So when we say “Matthew Stafford threw 24 touchdowns last year” or “Matthew Stafford had a 7.3 percent DVOA last year,” what we really mean is “Matthew Stafford, throwing at Golden Tate and Marvin Jones behind Detroit’s offensive line, in Jim Bob Cooter’s scheme” threw for 24 touchdowns and had a 7.3 percent DVOA. It’s an important point of context.
That means absorbing a new scheme -- and plenty of studying to get up to speed. Although Siemian spent part of his downtime vacationing in Ireland, he also spent time studying his iPad playbook. He re-watched every snap of OTAs and minicamp, not only to study the offense -- but to try and find weaknesses in the defense.
”I watched all the OTAs, all the reps,” Siemian said. ”It’s a relatively new scheme for all of us, so we’re still kind of ironing everything out. But I just went back through and watched everything. I watched how our defense is playing, too, because they’ve got some tweaks.”
It might only be practice that begins on July 27, but because it’s a full-scale quarterback competition, Siemian knows he has to treat it like the regular season if he wants the job. Broncos head coach Vance Joseph wants to name a quarterback as soon as he sees one of the two passers get separation.
If Siemian can do that, earn the starting job and succeed in the role, maybe next time he’ll be the player that kids want to meet.
Jaylon Smith hasn’t even stepped on the field, but there is already a buzz about him at training camp.
Thank Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for that.
Jones didn’t tap the brakes in his praise of Smith during the ‘State of the Cowboys’ news conference on Sunday afternoon.
Jones went as far as saying the organization had Smith rated as the top prospect in the 2016 draft – the same draft that produced Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott – before he sustained a severe knee injury during Notre Dame’s bowl game Jan. 1, 2016.
The Cowboys used their second-round pick to take Smith.
“He was at the top of the board and would have been at the top of the board this year,Authentic Maxx Williams Jersey,” Jones said. “The caveat is what we all wonder. Can he play like he had the career playing at that particular time? So that’s what we’re here to see. To me,womens Carl Davis Jersey , he’s just like looking at a No. 1 draft pick out here coming out on the field for the first time.
In volleyball news, ’18 Mount Notre Dame outside hitter Natalie Steibel committed to Pittsburgh July 17. Steibel, who plays her club volleyball at NKYVC, helped MND win the state championship last fall. She recorded 256 kills, 17 blocks and 35 digs as a junior and earned first-team all-Girls Greater Catholic League and Enquirer Fall All-Star honors. She was also named an all-state honorable mention by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association.
The 2017 Greater Cincinnati Sports Awards Female Athlete of the Year Hallie Heidemann earned a basketball scholarship offer from Wright State July 18. Heidemann, who is also a state-qualifying golfer, helped lead the Mohawks to an undefeated conference season in the GGCL last year. The first-team all-GGCL performer averaged 11.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and two steals per game. She was also named honorable mention all-state and Enquirer Winter All-Star.
Danny Shelton likes to keep himself on his toes when he’s away from the football field, and his summer vacation plans provide the latest evidence.
Shelton will be putting in plenty of work with Pene Talamaivao, Cleveland’s third-year defensive tackle will be across the globe in Samoa for multiple reasons. Though the headlining event is a much anticipated family reunion,Over the next couple of weeks, a former NFL defensive lineman with whom Shelton has worked in the past.
Through his prior experiences, Kizer has found that experience is the greatest teacher of all, whether it is through successful execution of plans or as a result of mistakes. And because of that, Kizer knows true value comes from hard work in practice.
“If you can go out and maximize practice, then you can maximize a game at a level that everyone wants you to,” Kizer said. “As far as throwing interceptions, that is a part of it. I’m still trying to figure this thing out. We were in a blitz period, and they were sending a couple different looks at me and I forced a ball I shouldn’t have forced.
“I will go back, watch film and I bet you won’t see that same pick ever again. That is part of the growing process, and I look forward to continuing to compete with him and continuing to have Coach Williams throw the kitchen sink at us and figure out how I can combat that so that when it comes time to go out there one day, hopefully, I have the right tools to be successful.”
“We saw a little bit of that. I know we were a 3-4 team, but he played as an end for us last year. I don’t think that is a huge transition for him,” Jackson said. “He has done a good job. He is working hard, he is understanding what we are expecting from him at that position and he has done well thus far.”
Over the next few months, the Browns will learn how much better Ogbah can be with a player like Garrett on the other side of the line. If offenses adjust their protections to account for Garrett, Ogbah could be the top beneficiary. And if Ogbah takes a big leap, the opposite could happen for Garrett.
Ogbah and Jackson were reluctant to get into specifics with how Garrett would benefit Ogbah’s performance, but both made it clear he would only help.
“For our defensive football team, he is a really good player,” Jackson said. “He is just going to mix into the culture that we have over there on defense with the rest of the guys, and hopefully, uplift everybody. I hope they all uplift each other as we go through this process.
“We all know one man cannot do it by himself, but I think having a guy with his skill and his talent, obviously, everybody will be able to see that and try to play to that, as well.”
With Whitworth gone, the focus turns to Dalton who passed for more than 4,200 yards and 18 touchdowns last season despite being under constant pressure, to assume more of a leadership role. It’s something Dalton insists he’s been doing already.
”Going into year seven now, I’m really comfortable with everything we have going here,” said Dalton. ”Now we have some of the new guys, just making sure everybody is up to speed on everything we’re doing. Communication is big. Making sure they know exactly how I want it to be. Guys are willing to learn. Everybody’s trying to be the best they can be. That’s what this time of the year is for. Got to keep improving. Need to get to stop thinking too much and play fast. We’ve gotten better this offseason.”
It’s been 26 years since the Bengals last won a playoff game. Head coach Marvin Lewis did not receive a contract extension during the offseason for the first time since 2010, making this a pivotal season in many respects along the banks of the Ohio River.
And so Cincinnati enters 2017 relying on continuity again. Would Brown and Lewis have it any other way?
They lost some key free agents, including stalwart linemen Andrew Whitworth and Kevin Zeitler on offense and Domata Peko on defense, and plan to rely on mostly players who were already in the building to fill their shoes.
That’s part of the Bengals way, too.
It didn’t work so well last year, but that doesn’t seem to have caused them to rethink much.
Despite an aging defense and a leaky offensive line weakened further by the aforementioned defections, the Bengals went for offensive playmakers in the first and second rounds of the draft.
That kept with their policy of drafting the best player available (BPA) when it’s their turn, one they hope also pays off this fall with Cedric Ogbuehi and Jake Fisher this fall.
Langford had surgery on the same ankle during the offseason to repair an injury he suffered last year. But Fox indicated the sprain is unrelated, saying that it’s “completely different than the repair he had. It was more of a low ankle sprain, a separate type of ankle injury that he kind of tweaked a little bit. It’s low ankle, so it’s not catastrophic.”
Culture change: Outside linebacker Lamarr Houston is one of only 11 players on the Bears’ 90-man roster who was acquired before general manager Ryan Pace was hired in 2015.
“It’s much different now,” Houston said. “We have a more cohesive locker room. Guys are excited to be here. Guys want to play football. They want to win. You can feel the vibe around the building. Everybody’s really into what we’re doing and how we’re doing it and I think that’s going to make us a much better football team.”
The other 10 players who were acquired by Pace’s predecessor, Phil Emery, are Josh Bellamy, Pat O’Donnell, Ka’Deem Carey, Sherrick McManis, Christian Jones, Charles Leno, Jr., Kyle Long, Zach Miller and Willie Young.
McPhee, on the other hand, sputtered before the flag was dropped. He had lost 10 pounds between January and April to take pressure off his knees, bringing his total weight loss to about 25 pounds since the end of 2015.
Trevathan, who trained with McPhee in Pensacola Beach, Florida, this offseason, said McPhee has the right attitude to bounce back.
“He’s a guy, he’s going to push through whatever,” Trevathan said. “If something’s not right with him, he’s going to let you know. He’s going to work to get better. That’s the type of leader he is, the type of person he is. That’s why I came here — because I know what type of team this team is, and the team it can be, with the attitude, and carry it over to the field.”
Making it to the field, though, just got more complicated.
The health of Danny Trevathan (torn patellar tendon) seems promising, but Nick Kwiatkoski should be able to do a good job filling in for him if needed. Jerrell Freeman is an anchor at linebacker and should easily lead the team in tackles.
The biggest improvement for the defense should come from the secondary. Instead of watching young players go through growing pains, the Bears should have much more reliable starting cornerbacks in Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper. Both veterans, along with free agent safety Quintin Demps, should help the defense improve upon the franchise-low eight interceptions the team had in the 2016 season. More takeaways would go a long way to quickly improve the overall rankings of the defense.
There are still a lot of “ifs”, but it’s pretty clear that the defense in 2017 should be better than the one in 2016. How much better it will be will likely depend on two things: the growth of younger players and, of course, the big one — health.
